Description
Anyone who has been to New Orleans, Louisiana should recognize this landmark, St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. Surrounded by a black wrought iron fence topped with the french fleur de lis, Jackson Square is where many street performers and other artists gather to show off their talents.
Declared as a National Historic Landmark in 1960, the center of the park features Andrew Jackson, a hero of the Battle of New Orleans who later served as a President of the United States.
Jackson square was designed after the the famous 17th century Place de Vosges in Paris by the architect Louis Pilie. The square was named in 1815 and built in 1856. In 1971, three streets were closed around the square (Chartres, St. Peter and St. Ann) in order to create a pedestrian mall surrounding the square.
